Two substances are chemically incompatible if bringing them together — even in small quantities — could result in a dangerous reaction. The most common reactive pairs fall into predictable categories:

Practical Segregation Principles
Effective chemical segregation goes beyond simply placing chemicals in separate cabinets. A robust segregation strategy should incorporate the following principles:
- Hazard class zoning — group chemicals by GHS/CLP hazard class and store each class in a dedicated area or cabinet. Do not mix flammables with oxidisers, or corrosives with reactive substances.
- Physical separation — incompatible groups should be physically separated, ideally in separate rooms or by distance. Where space is limited, separate locked cabinets are the minimum standard.
- Secondary containment — each storage area or cabinet should have its own independent bund or sump. Never share a drip tray between incompatible substance groups — a combined spill in the sump recreates the exact incompatibility hazard you are trying to avoid.
- Ventilation — ensure adequate ventilation for each storage zone, particularly for volatile substances. Shared ventilation between incompatible areas could allow vapour mixing.
- Signage — all storage areas must be clearly labelled with the hazard class of substances stored, supported by GHS hazard pictograms.
- Inventory control — minimise quantities stored to the minimum operationally required. Regular stock reviews prevent accumulation of aged chemicals.
Using Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Every hazardous substance supplied in the UK must be accompanied by a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) under the GB REACH Regulation. Section 7 of the SDS covers safe storage conditions, and Section 10 covers reactivity and incompatibility data. These sections are your primary reference when designing segregation arrangements.
Collect and file SDS documents for every substance on site. Ensure they are accessible to staff in the storage area — not just locked in an office. Review SDS compatibility before accepting any new chemical onto your site.
