Laboratories present some of the most complex chemical spill risks of any workplace. The sheer diversity of substances handled — from mild solvents to highly corrosive acids, reactive metals, and biohazardous materials — means that a one-size-fits-all approach to spill control is wholly inadequate. For UK research facilities, universities, pharmaceutical labs, and analytical testing environments, spill control must be tailored, compliant, and regularly reviewed under COSHH Regulations 2002.
The Regulatory Context
COSHH requires employers to assess the risks from hazardous substances and implement appropriate controls. In a laboratory setting, this means identifying every substance in use, understanding its hazard profile (via Safety Data Sheets), and ensuring that spill response equipment is available, appropriate, and accessible. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 provide the overarching framework within which COSHH assessments sit.
Additionally, laboratories that discharge to drain must comply with trade effluent consent conditions and the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016. A chemical spill that reaches a drain can trigger regulatory action well beyond the immediate H&S investigation.
Types of Laboratory Spills and Appropriate Responses
Laboratory spills broadly fall into four categories, each requiring specific containment materials:
- Acid spills — Require acid-neutralising absorbents (typically sodium bicarbonate-based). Standard cellulose pads will not neutralise and may react. Use acid-specific spill kits.
- Alkali/caustic spills — Require alkali-neutralising sorbents. Do not use acid neutralisers. Separate kits are essential if both acids and alkalis are present.
- Solvent/flammable liquid spills — Require non-sparking, chemical-resistant sorbents. Ensure adequate ventilation before responding. Remove all ignition sources immediately.
- General chemical/unknown spills — Use universal chemical absorbents that are resistant to a broad spectrum of substances. Suitable for mixed-chemistry environments.

Positioning and Accessibility
Under COSHH and laboratory best practice guidelines (including those published by the Royal Society of Chemistry), spill kits should be positioned within 10 metres of the point of use — or closer where high-volume or high-hazard substances are handled. Kits should never be stored inside a fume cupboard or in a locked cabinet that requires a key to access in an emergency.
Wall-mounted spill kit holders and under-bench storage units ensure kits are visible, accessible, and protected from cross-contamination. Review kit contents quarterly and after every use — a partially depleted kit is as dangerous as no kit at all.
Secondary Containment in the Lab
Chemical bottles and reagent containers should be stored in compatible secondary containment trays to capture leaks and drips before they become spills. Segregate incompatible substances using separate containment trays — never store acids and alkalis in the same tray, even if the bottles are sealed.
For larger volumes, spill pallets and bunded storage provide robust secondary containment compliant with EA and COSHH requirements.
Staff Training
Equipment alone is insufficient. All laboratory personnel should receive documented spill response training covering: identification of spill type, appropriate PPE selection, correct use of neutralising agents, waste disposal procedures, and incident reporting. Training records must be maintained as part of your COSHH compliance documentation.
