The Core Difference: Absorbent Material

The distinction between oil and chemical spill kits comes down primarily to the absorbent materials they contain. Oil-only kits use hydrophobic (water-repellent) absorbents that soak up hydrocarbons while repelling water. Chemical kits use universal or chemical-resistant absorbents capable of safely handling a broad range of substances including acids, solvents, alkalis, and unknowns.

When to Use an Oil Spill Kit

Oil-only spill kits are the correct choice when your primary spill risk involves hydrocarbons — engine oil, hydraulic fluid, diesel, petrol, lubricants, or transformer oil. Because the absorbents are hydrophobic, they work exceptionally well outdoors and near water, floating on the surface and selectively absorbing the oil without soaking up rainwater or surface water.

When to Use a Chemical Spill Kit

Chemical spill kits (sometimes called universal kits) are designed to handle a wider range of substances. If your site stores or uses acids, alkalis, solvents, unknown chemicals, or a mixture of substances, a chemical kit is the appropriate choice.

These kits often contain additional safety items such as chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile rather than standard latex), face shields, and sometimes pH-neutralising granules for acid or alkali spills. Some kits include hazmat waste disposal bags and tie wraps for safe containment of contaminated absorbents.

Universal Spill Kits: A Middle Ground?

Some sites opt for a universal spill kit — grey absorbents that handle both hydrocarbon and water-based spills. These offer flexibility where space is limited or where the range of substances is varied. However, bear in mind that universal absorbents do not float on water like oil-only absorbents do, so they are not ideal for outdoor water-adjacent applications.

How Many Spill Kits Do You Need?

Your COSHH risk assessment should inform the number and location of spill kits. As a general rule, place a spill kit at every point of significant spill risk — near drum storage, filling points, vehicle maintenance areas, and chemical dispensing stations. Kits should be replenished after every use and inspected at least monthly to ensure contents are complete and undamaged.
