What colour spill kit do I need?

Spill kits are colour-coded by type: White = oil-only (for petroleum, fuels, lubricants); Yellow = chemical (for acids, alkalis, solvents, cleaning agents); Grey = general purpose (for mixed substances); Orange = hazchem specialist. Use the calculator above to determine which colour you need.

How big does my spill kit need to be?

Your spill kit must be able to contain the worst-case foreseeable spill — typically the entire contents of the largest single container on site. A 25L drum = minimum 25L kit capacity; a 205L drum = minimum 100L kit; an IBC = minimum 240L kit.

Can I use one spill kit for different chemicals?

Only if using a general purpose (grey) kit with universal absorbents. Oil-only white kits are not suitable for chemical spills. For sites with both oils and chemicals, you need separate kits or a chemical kit that covers both applications.

Where should I place my spill kit?

EA PPG22 guidance recommends spill kits are positioned within 10 metres of the identified spill risk, clearly signed, accessible and not blocked, and checked monthly. Kits should not be stored in the same bund as the chemical — they need to be accessible from outside.

How often should I replace my spill kit?

Inspect monthly — replace any used, damaged, or expired items immediately. Conduct a full annual audit. PP oil-only absorbents have an indefinite shelf life if kept dry and away from UV. Cellulose (grey) absorbents should be replaced every 3-5 years even if unused.
